Freemasonry in Northern Ireland

Interested in Becoming a Freemason? Here’s Why

There are many reasons to become a Freemason, each centred on four important values that are deeply rooted in Freemasonry:

Integrity – Friendship – Charity – Respect

Men become Freemasons for many different reasons. Some follow in the footsteps of family members, while others are looking to build lasting friendships, find a greater sense of purpose, or have the opportunity to help those around them. Others are simply intrigued by the history, traditions and values of one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations.

Freemasonry brings together men from all walks of life, creating opportunities to form genuine friendships, support one another and contribute positively to their communities.

Across Northern Ireland, Freemasonry is practised within the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, with Lodges providing a place where members can meet, learn, develop themselves and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals.

What brings men together, and why so many remain members for many years, is the strong sense of friendship, support and fraternity that Freemasonry provides.

Built upon enduring values and traditions, Freemasonry continues to offer its members opportunities for personal development, fellowship and charitable service.

Put simply, Freemasonry makes good men better.

How Do I Become a Freemason?

Many people assume that they must be invited to become a Freemason, but this is not the case. While members may encourage friends who they believe would enjoy Freemasonry, candidates are not normally recruited or formally invited to join.

Anyone interested in becoming a Freemason is encouraged simply to make an enquiry. You do not need to already know a Freemason to express an interest in joining.

What Is the Process of Becoming a Freemason?

The process normally begins with an informal conversation and an opportunity to meet some Freemasons from a local Lodge. They will explain what Freemasonry involves, what may be expected of you, and how membership could fit around your family, work and other commitments.

This also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and decide whether Freemasonry is something you would like to pursue.

You and your family may then be invited to attend one of the Lodge’s social gatherings, giving you the opportunity to meet and socialise with members in a relaxed and informal setting.

Should you remain interested in joining, you will normally be proposed for membership by two existing members. Your application will then be considered by the Lodge and, where applicable, submitted to a ballot in accordance with the relevant rules and procedures.

The full process will usually take a few months, allowing both you and the Lodge sufficient time to get to know one another and ensuring that you have the opportunity to make an informed decision about becoming a Freemason.
